Supplements I Take:
I am asked all the time for what supplements I take, so I thought I would start with a post on that for those who have been asking.
As I reminder, I have worked VERY closely with my doctors so these are recommendations that have been tailored to me and my body. It is very important you talk to a healthcare provider before adding any supplements to your diet.
I am creating this post for you to use as an easy reference to have the discussion with your doctor so hope it is helpful! Also note these are commissionable links through Amazon.
My supplement and nutrition journey did not begin all on day one - I started with a few things here, then added a few things later after I noticed how they impacted my body. If you change everything all at once and then have something like indigestion, you won’t know what it exactly causing it so I do recommend adding one or two things at time. I have also changed some products along the way. Reminder: you can usually use your HSA (health savings account) for vitamins so check with your insurance to see what is covered. That said, here is what I take:
MORNING/AFTERNOON:
OWYN Plant Protein: I take this after I workout. I used to take protein before I walked, but found a huge benefit in taking after instead! I have only recently switched from a Whey Protein to a plant protein after talking to a dietician. I have a dairy sensitivity and I had absolutely no idea that whey could be causing inflammation in my body! Ha After only a month or so, I can say I LOVE this! It is a bit more expensive, but I have a hard time getting protein in so this as a shake is something I need. If you can get your protein through food, that should be able to replace this!
AG1: I started this around month 10 of my sobriety journey and I will say I think it made a huge difference in my hair and indigestion/gut bloating. I usually have this in the afternoon, but it is suggested to take first thing in the morning so do what works for you. I use the travel packs vs. the pouch and I personally like that better. This is what I use as my multivitamin. It contains B complex and also has pre- and pro-biotics. My husband is also on this. It is a bit expensive so if you are looking for a vitamin, I would reco talking to your dr about one that contains all the B vitamins because some do not and are sold separately. My AG1 starter pack also included a Vitamin D/K2 liquid supplement that I also add to this.
L-Glutamine: My functional medicine doctor recommended this for me to help with my leaky gut syndrome to help heal inflammation. I add this to my AG1. I will say I have not been as consistent in this, but am trying to get better about it.
EVENING:
Probiotics: I started these almost immediately when I quit drinking. I took at night, only because I could not get it together in the morning to take something routinely every morning. The night was easier for me so I just did that. I took these probiotics before I added in the AG1, so I do not take them separately anymore. However, I wanted to add them here because if AG1 is too expensive or you arent sure you want to start that yet, I would really talk to a dr about adding in probiotics to help with gut health. Drinking alcohol causes havoc to the gut lining, and probiotics have been said to help gut health, which in turn helps the skin. This brand is also at Costco.
Omega-3: My functional medicine doctor also recommended that I take this as my bloodwork showed I was low. I noticed a huge change in my hair and skin.
Magnesium Glycinate: This is a VERY new addition to my routine. I have only been on these about a month per my OBGYN. She recommended I take this for my hormonal balance and my bloodwork showed a magnesium deficiency. I also have PCOS and she said this may help with blood sugar stabilization. Verdict is out since I haven’t taken it that long yet to report on. Magnesium also can aid with sleep, though I do not see a difference. Since I quit drinking, I sleep very well.
Let me know if you have any questions - though I am not a healthcare professional, just passing along the things my doctors and dietitians have suggested I add to my diet.
